1. The fill holes are located on the top of the cartridge and are sealed with small plastic plugs. These must be removed by pushing them into the cartridge using a pointed instrument.
2. Place the needle provided on the syringe and fill with 12cc/ml of the correct color ink.
3. Hold the cartridge with the label facing you. Insert the needle into the fill hole of the color to be refilled (see diagram above, from left to right with the label facing you the colors are yellow, red, blue. Do not use the color sequence HP shows on the label).
4. 5. Push the needle all the way into the cartridge until it reaches the bottom. While watching the print heads slowly inject the correct color ink into the cartridge. Slowly inject 4cc/ml of ink. At the first sign of ink coming out of the print head stop filling that color and draw back on the syringe "plunger" approximately 1/8 inch. Next pull the needle out of the cartridge until it is approximately half way between the bottom and the top of the cartridge. Again when you see the ink come out of the print head stop filling that color. Insert another 4cc/ml of ink. Last pull the needle out until it is approximately 1 1/2 inches from the top of the cartridge. Insert the remaining ink into the sponge.
Important: Do not reseal the filling holes if you do the cartridge will not work properly. Do not inject the last ml if it is air bubbles, rinse the syringe with water, before filling with another color.
The C6578D cartridge has a serial number embedded on the electronic contacts. The printer reads this number and counts the number of ink droplets that come out. When the counter reaches a predetermined number (it does not matter which color gets to that number first) the low ink light will come on. The colors are not used at the same rates so not all colors will take the same amount of ink. This is why you need to watch the printhead while you are filling the cartridge for the first sign of ink on the particular color you are filling. After you have refilled the cartridge the low ink light may continue to show low ink levels. This is because the printer still thinks that the cartridge is empty. The cartridge will still work even with the light on.
